Rebirth in Islam and Suicide

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Is there rebirth in islam ? What happened to people in the judgement day who die in accident or committing suicide ?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

I hope you are in the best of health and spirits, insha’Allah.

There is no such thing as ‘rebirth’ in Islam.

Those who died by means of suicide, which is a grave sin, as noted by Ibn Hajar al-Haytami in his list of enormities, and those who died in accidents will be brought back to life on the day of judgement just like everybody else.

‘Every soul must taste of death, and We try you with evil and with good, for ordeal. And unto Us ye will be returned.’ [21:35] ‘[He] who created death and life, that He might try you which of you is fairest in works; and He is the All-mighty, the All-forgiving.’ [67:2]

Everything has already been written and the pages have dried. Death can come at any time. We should ask ourselves what we have prepared for it.

We ask Alah for well-being (`afiya) in this life and the hereafter.

And Allah knows best.
