Is It Permissible to Wear Gemstones?

Question

I have a question about wearing precious gemstones (sapphire) as someone advised me that it is not suitable for everyone and might cause some ill effects. As a Muslim, I believe that only Allah Most High has the power to change a person’s life rather than materialistic and nonliving things. Please clarify.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

It is permissible for a woman to wear any precious stones. However, according to the relied upon position, scholars only allowed men to wear silver rings (including the ‘aqiq stone). All other types of adornment are not permitted for men. [Mawsili, al-Ikhtiyar fi T’alil al-Mukhtar]

As Muslims, we do not believe in nor ascribe any unique role to the stones themselves. These stones are created things, and all created things depend on Allah Most High, who alone is the sole possessor of ability.

Excluded are things that have some utility to them and are not solely for adornment, such as a wristwatch.
