Question

Are there markets in Paradise? What do people do there?

Answer

Yes, there are markets in Paradise. People will visit them every so often – after the passing of the time between one Friday and the next. They will be places of socialising and “window shopping” where people will go to look at and admire beautiful things or see beautiful items and then request them from Allah.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Truly, the People of the Garden will have markets they visit every Friday. There will be dunes of musk in them. When they go there, winds will blow and fill their faces, clothes, and homes with [the smell of] musk; they will increase in physical and external (husn wa jamal) beauty. They will then return home and say to their wives, ‘You have increased in physical and external beauty after we left,’ and their wives will say the same of them.” [Muslim]

Another narration says, “Indeed, there are many markets in the Garden. There is no buying or selling in them except in form. Whoever likes something gains it…” [Tirmidhi]

Scholars explained the last part to mean they will go to either look at and admire things of beauty Allah has created – which can bring pleasure to someone – or that they will look at nice clothing or other items and then be given them. [Mubarakpuri, Tuhfa al Ahwadhi]

May Allah make us of those who always gaze at His beauty and Perfection in Paradise.
