Can One Create Multiple Accounts to Get Many Video Game Licenses For Free—and Then Sell Them?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Some video game companies sell their games for free for a short period of time (a couple of days). They sell them for their full price again (they do this so more people play the game and recommend it to others so they can sell more of it without losing much as the game is free for a short time only). Some people make lots of accounts and add those games while being free and then sell them for a cheap price when the game is sold for its full price again to people who missed out adding the game.

Walaikum assalam,

I hope you’re doing well, insha’Allah.

This would appear to be against the terms of agreement of setting up one account per user—especially when availing oneself of free or discounted offers.

The believer doesn’t cheat.

The Beloved Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him & his folk) said, “Whoever cheats is not of us,” [Tirmidhi. And in another narration, he said, “Whoever cheats us is not of us.” [Muslim, and others]

And Allah is the giver of success and facilitation.
