How Do I Stop My Drinking Habit?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: How do I stop drinking?

Answer:

Dear questioner,

May Allah bless you and increase you in good.

The question of drinking is serious and requires a very thorough answer. The answer or solution to this may be religious reminders and guidance, but it may also require help from professionals who help in addiction and how to overcome it. For those kinds of programs, you may want to consult the relevant professionals who can help.

Religion As a Form Of Guidance

Solutions to our problems are not always in some special litany or ” wazifa” that will save us and change our ways. Sometimes there is no ” quick fix” to a problem. I am not saying Allah will not answer your prayers, rather I am saying that Allah has already answered our prayers by granting us a path of salvation and success. That is essentially the “straight path.”
Allah says in the Qur’an, “This is My path, leading straight, so follow it, and do not follow other ways: they will lead you away from it- ‘This is what He commands you to do, so that you may refrain from wrongdoing.’” [Qur’an 6:153]
So learn as much as you can about Islam and practice from it as much as you are able to. Make sure to not fall short of fulfilling the obligations of the religion. They are not that many, but obligations are there to assist and swiftly help us to gain nearness to Allah.

The Path To Succeed

The person should ensure that their religious obligations are met; such as the prayers. The prayer is very important, it assists a person to leave sin.

Allah Most High says in the Qur’an, “[Prophet], recite what has been revealed to you of the Scripture; keep up the prayer: prayer restrains outrageous and unacceptable behavior. Remembering God is greater: God knows everything you are doing.” [Quran 29:45]

Keep up with spiritual practice and remember Allah as often as you can.

Keeping Good Company

I would really advise this person to keep good company. This will help tremendously in their struggle to succeed against drinking alcohol.

Allah Most High commands us to seek the best of the company as He says, “O you who believe! Fear Allah and be with the sincere and truthful.” [Qur’an 9:119]

Our Beloved Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) reinforced this Divine injunction when he advised his community, “A person is on the religion of his close friend, so let him carefully examine who he befriends.” [Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud]

One should spend time with believers that are strong-willed and of good character, people who remind one of Allah Most High. Our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) described such people when he said, “Indeed some people are keys to the remembrance of Allah; when they are seen, Allah is remembered.” [Tabarani, Kabir]

Prayer Of Need

You can try to pray the prayer of need in the last part of the night before Fajr prayer (perhaps by 15 min. before)  Link here:  Prayer of Need.
Pray to Allah and ask Him to change their heart and their destructive habit.
Persist after every prayer to continue to pray for them while also taking the means to rectify your life and draw closer to Allah with true repentance. In conclusion, keep your intention strong to leave this sin, and take the means by doing good deeds while supplicating Allah to help you succeed. Remember that many people have left drinking and succeeded, so believe with Allah’s help that you will as well.
