RE: sleeping during fast

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I work 4pm to midnight, I get home around 2 am. I sleep 2.5 hours and rise to eat and pray. Sometimes I read the Quran until sun up, other times I go back to bed. I rise again at 9am or at latest by Zhur and I am up for the rest of the day. Effectively I sleep 3-5 hours during the fasting period. Am I nullifying my fast?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

No. There is nothing wrong with this, given your schedule.

The fast is only broken by solids or liquids entering the body cavity and by intercourse or deliberate ejaculation, as described in The Essentials of Fasting at www.sunnipath.com.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
