Can the money I give my father count as sadaqa?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I give my father a monetary amount monthly, to help him pay for our families auto insurance and other expenses. Sometimes I write the check directly to the insurance provider. Can I give this money to him with the intention of it counting as sadaqah? Can it count as sadaqah?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate.

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Yes, it can count as charity (sadaqa), but not as zakat, as zakat cannot be given to one’s parents, children, or spouse. [Ibn al-Humam, Fath al-Qadir]
