Istikhara in English

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I am not a fluent Arabic speaker as i am born and raised in Australia. Am i able to perform salat al-Istikhara as normal but say the du’aa in English? Would my Istikhara be vaild according to Hanafi Mathhab?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

It is best to say the sunna supplications (dua) in Arabic, and to learn what they mean–so that one’s heart is more involved in the supplication.

However, given that the istikhara supplication is given after the two rakats of prayer, saying it in English would not affect the prayer nor render it disliked.

And Allah alone gives success.

Faraz Rabbani
