Dreaming about a dead person

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Recently, i had a young cousin pass away and many family members, as well as myself, see him in our dreams. i have heard that if a dead person comes in your dream that it is actually them in your dream and they are visiting you. is this true? i was confused because i have learned the soul stays in the grave after death. besides dreams, is there any situation where the dead is among you? May Allah’s reward be with you.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

It is possible that you beheld the soul of the dead person in your dreams–and it is possible that it was merely your dream-imagining. It is possible for the souls of the dead to ‘roam’ in creation, and even for them to be seen in waking or sleep (though, of course, this isn’t common. [Ibn al-Qayyim, K. al-Ruh]

And Allah alone gives success.
