Wiping over tights

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I have read about wiping over socks from the site and JazakAllah for providing this information, but it is not clear whether you include “tights” under this category. Tights are normally made from nylon and are like socks but worn like trousers … they go over the whole leg and upto the abdomen and have a crotch (i.e. they are one-piece of material as opposed to two pieces).  If we are making wudu in a public place, sometimes it is not right for the sister to take off tights (for obvious reasons). So can she just pass a wet hand over the tights?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

It would not be valid to wipe over tights. Rather, if one wears tights, thick socks (e.g. heavy wool) or khuffs should be worn over them, in order to be able to wipe validly.

Wassalam,
