Can zakat be given to descendants of the Prophet (Salallahu Alaihi Wassalam)?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Abu Usamah

Can Zakat be given to descendants of the Prophet Salallahu alaihi wassalam if they fulfill the other requirements of Zakat?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Al-Salam alaykum

Zakah cannot be given to the Banu Hashim i.e the descendants of `Ali, `Abbas, Ja`far, `Aqil and Harith bin Abdul Muttalib in honour of Rasulullah (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam). In a hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim it is stated: “This charity is the dirt of the (property) of people and is not permissible for Muhammad (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) and his family.”
