Not sure if filth has touched your garment

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I wanted to know whether or not it is obligatory for someone to wash their garment if they are not sure with certainty that filth has touched. Because I’m in school all from the day to evening, I wanted to know if there is a lenient opinion to this question.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

The basis of all things is that they are ritually pure (tahir) until the contrary is soundly-established. This is our operational certainty, and the legal maxim is that, “Certainty is not lifted by doubt.” [Ibn Nujaym, al-Ashbah] Rather, you would assume that your clothes are pure until you know for sure that there is an excessive amount of filth on them.
