When praying an obligatory prayer, am I allowed to hold the Qoran in my hand and read?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

When praying an obligatory prayer, am I allowed to hold the Qoran in my hand and read sura”s which I do not know by heart, or is that only permitted in sunna?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

In the Hanafi school, it is not valid nor permitted to hold and recite from the Qur’an in prayer–whether in obligatory or supererogatory prayer. In fact, doing so invalidates the prayer. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
