Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Is it sinful to forget verses of the Qur’an one had memorized?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate. May His abundant blessing and most perfect of peace be on His Beloved Prophet, the best of creation, and his family, companions and followers.
In the Hanafi school, it is only sinful to forget the Qur’an if one can no longer read it from the text. This is what the hadiths related to the tremendousness of the sin of those who forget’ the Qur’an are understood to mean in the Hanafi school. [Nahlawi, Hadhr wa’l Ibaha; Khadimi, al-Bariqa fi Sharh al-Tariqa 4.194]
However, the sunna is to keep revising one’s memorization, in order not to forget. This is also religiously more precautionary, because in other schools it is sinful to forget even a small amount of Qur’an.
And Allah alone gives success.
