Consequences for Muslim man baptizing child in Christian/Catholic faith?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
A muslim man married a Christian woman and they have a baby. The woman wants to raise the child in a Christian/Catholic way. The husband agrees to baptize the child. What are the consequences / punishment for him as a muslim according to the Shari’ah?? THank you for your advice.

Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Inspirer of Truth.
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

According to the information you have provided, undoubtedly, the man has commited a great wrong and punishiable in the Shari’ah. It is very important that the Deen of the child is protected throughout its life in a wholesome, Islamic-conducive environment, however at the inception of this poor child’s life, the father has failed in his duty.

Rather, than mulling on the punishments of this man, I think it is more appropriate and more rewarding for the family, community (and all others) especially to make concern for this brother, as his own Faith is in danger. Is there any person(s) who could go to meet him to make him understand the consequences of his actions, and make some positive change? Perhaps some suitable convert who would be able to explain the Virtues of preserving the Deen? One may speak to the brothers who make mashwarrah (consultation) with the Imaam of the Masjid for strategies, to meet this brother and make him understand. Also one may liaise with the Tablighi Jam’aat brothers, so that they may organise a meeting with an appropriate brother.

And Allah knows Best
