Not fasting during the month of Ramadhaan due to laziness

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I haven’t been fasting for several years, maybe 5-6 years without any proper reason (laziness). Ramadhaan is coming next month. Do I have to record the years I haven’t fasted for before I can fast in 2019? How much do I pay per day for the days I can’t fast?

Bismillaah

A: The fast of Ramadhaan is fard. Leaving out a fard on account of laziness is a major sin. You should sincerely repent to Allah Ta’ala for leaving out the fast in the previous years and make a firm resolve that you will not repeat this major sin in the future.

You should calculate your missed fast for the previous years and keep the qadha for all those fast. You can keep the qadha of your missed fast before the month of Ramadhaan (of 2019) and after the month of Ramadhaan. However, during the month of Ramadhaan you will keep the fard fast of Ramadhaan. As long as you are able to fast, it will not be permissible for you to give kaffaarah on behalf of the missed fast.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
