Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it permissible to consume shellac which is typically being used as a glazing agent in sweets and chocolates?

Bismillaah

A: Hazrat Thaanwi (Rahmatullahi Alayh) mentioned the maslah relating to shellac in behishti zewar. According to Hazrat Thaanwi (Rahmatullahi Alayh) it is permissible. You may refer to a reliable halaal certifying body in whom you have confidance.
