Meaning of “No compulsion in Islam”

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I got a question from my non-Muslim friends. The questions is ‘Why they say in Islam there’s no compulsion in religion but people cannot leave Islam?’

Bismillaah

A: There is no compulsion in accepting; after accepting one needs to remain firm on Islam. This is not called compulsion. Otherwise, if we have to go by your reasoning then namaaz and roza will not be obligatory.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
