Making a verbal intention

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: A غير مقلد Islamic teacher said that speaking out the niyyah before praying is bid’ah because it is not proved by sunnah or Sahaabah. Is it right?

Bismillaah

A: The ghayr muqallid has strayed miserably. When the hadeeth is clear that the actions are based on intentions then the hadeeth is telling you that the actions have to be intended and you will only get a merit and value after you have intended. And an intention is to specify something, a deed or an action.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
