Listening to poetry (ashaar)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it permissible to listen to shaairi that makes a person emotional thinking about the blessings of Allah Ta’ala and the Azmat of Nabi-e-akram (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)? This may make a person’s heart soft but does not count as ibaadah, or does it?

A: One may listen occasionally in seclusion.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
