Arabic word for proposal and engagement

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What is the Arabic name when a boy proposes to a woman called and engagement?

Bismillaah

A: A proposal is called khitbah in Arabic. When we say that so and so is engaged, then this refers to the acceptance of the proposal. However, as far as the engagement ceremony is concerned, then this is a western custom. It is not recognised in Islam.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
