Sexual Intercourse During Pregnancy

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mathabah.org

Question:

I need to ask a question. Is it prohibited in Islam to have sex during the entire pregnancy (from 1st month to last month)? Please give me your guidance. My husband almost forces me to satisfy him and I am in pain during intercourse. I am 6 months pregnant.

Answer:

Jazakumulalhu Khayran/ Thank you for your question. Congratulations on your pregnancy. We pray Almighty Allah bless you and your family with a healthy child.

Intercourse in marriage is permitted during pregnancy. A husband and wife may enjoy intercourse as per their needs, as often as they wish. Each partner should be considerate of the other in terms of needs, health and timings. Mutual understanding and moderation is key in a healthy marital relationship.

In your pregnancy, if you are under pain during intercourse, your husband should respect your feelings and hold off until you feel better.

Islamically, the only prohibited occasions for intercourse are the following:

  • When the wife is experiencing menses and or post-natal bleeding
  • When either partner is fasting during daylight hours
  • When either partner is in the state of ihram for pilgrimage (Hajj or Umrah)

And Allah Knows Best
