Charging To Perform Nikah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

Are the authorities of the Masjid allowed to charge the public a sum of money to perform Nikah in it?

Jazakallah
Wassalaam

Answer:

Reading out the sermon of Nikah and making the parties propose and accept are all acts of worship. It is encouraged in many Ahadeeth that the ceremony of Nikah be conducted in the Masjid. Therefore, it will be incorrect to charge a fee from the Nikah parties or their associates for simply performing the Nikah in the Masjid. However, if the committee members have to make special arrangements, which are not from the necessities of Nikah i.e. without these special arrangements, Nikah can still be conducted in the Masjid, then for these special arrangements the committee members can charge a fee.
