Calling the Husband by Name

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum
Respected Mufti Saheb
I have a question:
We have been told that it is Makrooh for a woman to call her husband by his name. What if the husband doesn’t mind, but rather prefers his wife to call him by his name? Would it still be Makrooh or would it be said that this is a right of the husband, thus he has the permission to waive his right?
What should the wife then call the husband, as we see our mothers not calling their husbands by any name at all, they just shout at them or for them?
Jazakallah

Answer:

The Jurist have regarded a woman’s calling her husband by his name Makrooh (odious) due to it being regarded as disrespectful in their time and according to their custom. However, if the husband prefers to be called by his name, or according to the custom the wife calls the husband by his name and the husband also does not feel insulted then it will not be Makrooh (odious).

If the wife does not wish to call the husband by his name then she should say:   “Abu Muhammad” (the father of Muhammad) or according to what ever the child’s name may be.
