Question:

Q1-How much reward will a person lose for keeping a Dog as a pet?

Q1-Is it permissible to keep a Dog in the garden with the intention of  keeping burglars and intruders away?

Answer:

The reward of 2 Qiraats will be deducted from the account of those people who keep a pet dog, i.e. he neither intends that the dog hunts nor guard.  It has been narrated from Ibne Umar (R.A.) that Rasoolullah (S.A.W.) said:  “Two Qiraats of reward will be deducted from the account of such a person who keeps a harmless dog (pet).” It is permissible to keep a dog in the garden with this intention that it will protect the home from thieves.  (Tirmizi, Page 274)

N.B. One Qiraat equals 5 grains of barley which equals 21.87 centigrams metric.  It is mentioned in the Hadith that 2 Qiraats equals to 10 grains of barley which is equal to 43.74 centigrams metric.
