Is it allowed to keep a dog as a pet in Islam?

Assalamualaikum. Dear learned imam sahib , please advice me , is it allowable in Islam to have a dog as a pet. Some say , we can have a dog , provided it does not enter the insides of the house and it can be kept in the garden or compund area ? please advice further jazak allah khair

Answer

(Fatwa: 77/52/D=1432)

It is lawful to keep dog for hunting and watching the farm and house. It is not lawful to have a dog as pet. It is mentioned in a hadith: He who kept a dog for needs other than hunting or watching the herd and farm, he would lose one qirat of reward every day.
عن أبي هريرة عن النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم من اتخذ كلبا إلا كلب ماشية أو صيد أو زرع انتقص من أجره كل يوم قيراط . (ابو داؤد – 393)
