Is it sinful to drive without a license?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Jamia Binoria

(1) Is it sinful to drive without a license? Someone works as a driver but he doesn’t have his license… (2) Is it permissible to pick up passengers in a personal car when the driver doesn’t have a taxi permit? Will his earnings be permissible or not? (3) If the earnings of someone working as a taxi driver without a license is Halal, and this is merely breaking the law, then what is the sin and punishment for breaking the law in Islam? Meaning, will Allah take us to task for breaking the laws of Pakistan?

الجواب حامدا و مصلیا

Although the earnings from driving without a license or picking up passengers in one’s personal car without a taxi permit is lawful as per Shari’ah, violating the legitimate laws made by the government is blameworthy, both legally and as per Shari’ah. Hence, one should avoid infringing the law and adopting the mentioned course of action.
