What should I do about was wasa in my Salat?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by IslamicSolutions.org

Shortened Question:

What should I do about was wasa in my Salat?

Question:

I have stopped performing Salat due to excessive was wasa which is leading me to commit Shirk.

What should I do?

Why does it seem as if Allah is angry with me?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Was wasa in your Salat is the whispers of the Shaitan. The Shaitan is playing tricks on you so that you will abandon your Salat.[1] You must calculate all the Salats that you have missed and make Qada for each Salat.

The Shaitan only attacks those with Iman. The Shaitan will not attack a person who does not have Iman. In one narration from Sahih Muslim Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi wa Sallam mentioned that was-wasa is a sign of pure Iman.[2]

The solution to the problem is not to abandon Salat because of was-wasa. The solution is to continue doing what you are doing. If you leave Salat then the Shaitan will emerge as the winner. If a thief breaks into your home you would not abandon your home and leave him to freely take what he wants. Instead you would try to get him out without allowing him to take anything at all.Likewise you should fight against the Shaitan so that he does not steal anything from your Salat.

Think of yourself driving on the freeway with a lot of other cars going by. If you should stop and watch them go by you will never reach your destination. Similarly, if you stop performing Salat, you will not fulfill the command of Allah to perform Salat and the Shaitan will be victorious in getting you to be disobedient to Allah.

Salat is one of the five fundamental Pillars of Islam. Salat is Fard (compulsory) upon every Muslim. Regardless of the difficulties you face in performing Salat you should still perform Salat.

Allah will be pleased with the sacrifice of fighting the Shaitan and performing Salat. Leaving out Salat leads to Allah getting angry. Allah does not get angry if one experiences was-wasa.
