Giving Zakat in advance

Giving Zakat in advance

Question

My Zakat anniversary is in Shawwāl. However, I wish to donate my Zakat in Ramadan. Is this permissible? Can Zakat be given in advance?

Answer

Zakat can be given in advance of one’s Zakat anniversary. There may be circumstances wherein this should be considered for example during emergencies. One should make any necessary adjustments based on their Zakatable assets on their Zakat anniversary.

Note: If someone’s Zakat is due in Shaʿbān, one should not wait for Ramadan to discharge his obligation. If for some reason it is not possible to discharge in Shaʿbān because the Zakat collectors come in Ramadan, one should separate the Zakat amount in Shaʿbān in an envelope and discharge in Ramadan. This should also be mentioned in the Waṣiyyah (will).
