Ibn Sirin (rahimahullah) on seeking excuses for a Muslim brother

Question

What is the reference and Arabic text for this narration?

Muhammad ibn Sirin (rahimahullah) said: “If some news reaches you about your brother [i.e. an error or sin of his] then seek an excuse for him. If you do not find an excuse for him, then you should still say: He [definitely] has an excuse.’

 

Answer

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has recorded this statement of Imam Muhammad Ibn Sirin (rahimahullah).

Arabic text

عن محمد بن سيرين قال: إذا بلغك عن أخيك شيء فالتمس له عذرا فإن لم تجد له عذرا فقل: له عذر
