Two Hadiths on encouraging others to recite the Quran

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

I have come across these two narrations which have a slight variation in wording. Kindly mention which version is correct. Or are both acceptable?

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 1852)

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 1854)

Answer

Imams Tabarani, Bayhaqi and others (rahimahumullah) have recorded this narration in their respective Hadith compilations. In the second quote above, it has appeared (Mawqufan) as the statement of Sayyiduna ’Abidah/’Ubaydah Al-Mulayki/Al-Umluki (radiyallahu ‘anhu), and in the first quote, it is cited (Marfu’an) as the statement of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam), narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abidah (i.e. the same Sahabi – radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Al-Mu’jamul Kabir; Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 2 pg. 252, Shu’abul Iman, Hadiths: 1852-1854; Also see: Kitabu Dhikri Akhbari Asbahan, vol. 1 pg. 260, Usdul Ghabah, vol. 3 pg. 544, Fadailul Quran of Hafiz Ibn Kathir, pgs. 184-185 and 302, Maktabah Ibn Taymiyyah edition, and Al-Isabah, vol. 4 pg. 355)

Both versions have been reported via a chain consisting of Abu Bakr ibn ‘Abdillah ibn Abi Maryam, a weak narrator. Nonetheless, this Hadith can be quoted as a means of encouraging others to recite the Quran as is the case with Hadiths of this nature.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
