An unreliable Hadith regarding expenditure in Ramadan

Question

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The expenses spent in Ramadan, Allah will not hold a person accountable for on the Day of Resurrection.”

Can this narration be quoted?

Answer

This is recorded as part of a longer narration in Tarikh Ibn Najjar. The part in question is as follows:

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “…A person will not be held accountable for his expenditure in Ramadan…”

However, ‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has quoted Ibn Najjar himself to have declared the text of the Hadith unreliable (munkar). Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith a fabrication.

(Refer: Lisanul Mizan, vol. 4 pg. 415/416, Dhaylul La-Alil Masnu’ah, vol. 1 pg. 188, Hadith: 219 and Tanzihush Shari’ah, vol. 1 pg. 279)

The Hadith is not suitable to quote.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
