Translation

Sayyiduna ‘Amr ibn ‘Abasah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports: “A man once said, O Messenger of Allah! What is Islam?” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, ‘That your heart submits/surrenders to Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla and the Muslims are safe from [the harm] of your tongue and hand.’ He then asked, Which type of Islam is best?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Iman’, upon which he asked, ‘And what is Iman?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, ‘That you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His Messengers and resurrection after death.’ The man asked further, ‘Which type of Iman is the best?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, ‘Hijrah’, upon which he asked, ‘What is Hijrah?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘That you abandon sins.’ This person continued, ‘So which type of Hijrah is the best?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Jihad’, upon which the questioner asked, ‘And what is jihad?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, ‘That you fight the disbelievers when you encounter them [in battle].’ He then asked, ‘Which jihad is best?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘That jihad wherein a person’s horse is wounded and his blood spilt.’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then said, ‘And two actions, they are the most virtuous of actions, except for those who also carry them out; an accepted Hajj or ‘Umrah.’”

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
