When looking in to a mirror is it sunnah to recite
Allahumma anta hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi
or without the anta after Allahumma, like follows:
Allahumma hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi ?
Jazak Allahu Khair
Answer
This du’a has been reported with various wordings. One could recite any of these that have appeared in the narrations.
The first wording you enquire is quoted by the popular author in the topic of du’as; ‘Allamah Jazari (rahimahullah) as well as ‘Allamah Ibnul Imam (rahimahullah) – also an author on this subject-
Refer to: Al-Hisnul Hasin, pg. 118 and Silahul Mumin, Hadith:879.
It seems to be a combination of the narrations found in Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 959, Baihaqi, (Da’watul Kabir, Hadith: 438 & Shu’ab, Hadith: 8183-5185), and Darimi; see Al-Futuhatur Rabbaniyyah, vol.6 pg.195 & Sharhul Ihya, vol.5 pg.113.
The second version is also found in the Hadith. (Musnad Abu Ya’la, Hadith: 5075)
Besides these two versions, there are others too.
(See Musnad Tayalisi, Hadith: 374, Musnad Ahmad, vol.6 pg.68 and vol.1 pg.403, Ibnus Sunni, hadith: 163 , Az-Zud of Hannad ibnus Sariy, Hadith: 1273 and others. Also see Sharhul Ihya, vol.5 pg.113.)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
