The narrator, Abu Ramlah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Could you kindly advise on the strength of this narration which I have sourced from Sharh Mukhtasar Tahawi, vol. 7 pg. 311, as there is a narrator by the name of Abu Ramlah

Answer

The narrator; Abu Ramlah, ‘Amir Al-Basri, despite being unknown to some earlier Muhaddithun, can be declared acceptable on the basis of Imam Tirmidhi’s (rahimahullah) ruling of his Hadith being sound.

(Footnotes of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah on Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 24786)

This is based on the principle of tawthiq dimni.

(For more on this principle, See Dirasatul kashif, pg.39-43 of My Honourable Teacher; Al-‘Allamatul Muhaddith, Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah -hafizahullah-)

Note 1: Some Hadith masters only cite ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Awn as the sole student of Abu Ramlah. However, based on the passage you have cited from Imam Jassas (rahimahullah), Imams Sha’bi as well as Sulayman at-Taymi (rahimahumallah) are also his students. This makes three reliable students.

Note 2: The beginning part of the chain is omitted in the passage of Imam Jassas. To be able to comment on the full chain, this part needs to be inspected first.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
