Status of the hadith on the hearts becoming hard

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I heard a hadith in which the Prophet (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) mentions that the inability to weep is caused by the hardness of the heart which is caused by the multiplicity of sin which is caused by the love of this world which is caused by ambition which is caused by the forgetfulness of death. Can you please give me the exact wording?

Answer

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) said:

“The inability to weep is due to committing excessive sins. That is due to not fearing Allah which results in the hardness of the heart. The hardness of the heart is caused by the love of the world.”

(Musnadul-Firdaws, vol.4 pg.402; hadith 6690)

Note: The chain of narrators for this hadith is quite weak. (Tanzihu-Shari’ah, vol.2 pg.314).

However, the broader meaning of this hadith is supported through other traditions.
