Sayyidah Qaribah/Quraybah (radiyallahu’anha)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Did Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) marry the sister of Ummul Mu’minin,  Ummu Salamah, named: Qaribah (radiyallahu ‘anhuma)?

Answer

Sayyidatuna Qaribah/Quraybah bint Abi Umayyah (radiyallahu’anha), was indeed the sister of Ummul Muminin; Sayyidatuna Ummu Salamah (radiyallahu’anha).

A narration in Sahih Bukhari states that she was married and divorced by Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu) and was then married to Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah (radiyallahu’anhuma).

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2733)

The historians have mentioned her marriage to Sayyiduna ‘Umar, Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah as well as Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Bakr (radiyallahu’anhu).

Her name is pronounced in the both the ways cited above.

(Al-Bidayah wan Nihayah, vol.7 pg.131-132 and Al-Isabah, vol.4 pg.390)

In my understanding, she was married to the above mentioned Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) in the order that I have mentioned them.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
