‘Do not crowd at the Hajarul Aswad, lest you harm someone’

Is this Hadith authentic?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) prohibited Sayyiduna ‘Umar from kissing black stone if crowded and a means of discomfort and harm.

Answer

Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) and other Muhaddithun have recorded this Hadith. The full Hadith is as follows:

“Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) told Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu), ‘O ‘Umar! You are a strong man. Do not crowd up by the Hajar [Al Aswad]  lest you harm/hurt a weak person. If you find a gap, go and touch it, otherwise face it and recite tahlil [La ilaha illallah] and takbir [Allahu Akbar].

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 1 pg. 28)

Hafiz Ibn Kathir (rahimahullah) says, ‘The chain is authentic [jayyid], however there is an unnamed narrator. It seems that he too is reliable…’ He then cites another chain which mentions his name.

(Al Bidayah Wan Nihayah, vol. 5 pg. 205-206. Also see: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 3 pg. 241)

The Hadith in question is suitable to quote.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
