The importance of carrying out good deeds, especially Salah with concentration and devotion

I heard this Hadith in a talk. Is it authentic?

“Allah Ta’ala does not accept an action until a person’s heart and body are both present” [i.e. until a person carries out the deed with complete devotion and concentration].

Answer

Muhammad Ibn Nasr Al Marwazi (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of ‘Uthman ibn Abi Dahrash rahimahullah [mursalan]. Imam Daylami (rahimahullah) has recorded the Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka’b (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) has declared the chain weak.

‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) states that the mursal (a chain with an omission after the Tabi’i) version is more correct.

The Hadith is suitable to quote as is the case with Hadiths of this nature.

(Ta’zimu Qadris Salah, Hadith: 157. Refer: Targhib, vol. 1 pg. 348, Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 400)

Text of the Hadith

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked a Sahabi if he had erred in a Surah which he recited in the Salah. The Sahabi was unable to answer. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked another Sahabi and he too was unable to recall.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) had reprimanded them and then said, ‘Allah Ta’ala does not accept an action until a person’s heart and body are both present.’

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
