The number of Sahabah that narrated Hadith

Question

What is the total number of Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) that narrated Hadith?

Can you kindly provide a complete list of their names?

Answer

Ibn Hazam Az Zahiri (rahimahullah) has authored a book on the names of all those Sahabah who have reported Hadith, including the number of Hadiths that they have reported. He has based his book on Imam Baqiy ibn Makhlad (rahimahullah)’s magnum opus encyclopediac work, Musnad Baqiy ibn Makhlad (which unfortunately is not found today). Ibn Hazam has enlisted one thousand and eighteen (1018) names.

(Asma-us Sahabah Ar Ruwat of Ibn Hazam -rahimahullah-)

One should bear in mind that this number, together with the number of Hadith each Sahabi narrated are approximate figures and based on the numbers in ‘Musnad Baqiy ibn Makhlad’ only.

(Talqihu Fuhumi Ahlil Athar, of Ibnul Jawzi, pg. 183)

It is difficult to enlist one thousand and eighteen names here, kindly refer to the books mentioned above.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
