Saying salam when departing

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Making Salam when entering home and meeting people is established. Is salam when leaving home, leaving ie departing from people also established?

Answer

I haven’t come accross a clear hadith on this, but salam when departing could be proven from the practice of Nabi Ibrahim (‘alahis salam). When he was departing his hometown, he said to them: Peace (salam) be upon you.

(Surah Maryam, ayah: 47)

The Commentators of Quran have mentioned -among other explanations- that this could have possibly been the salam (that is usually done) for farewell.

(Tafsir Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir, Ma’ariful Quran, Surah Maryam, ayah:47)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
