Did an earthquake occur during the time of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)?

Is there a narration in which there is mention that an earthquake took place in Madinah Munawwarah during the time of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)?

Answer

Imam Ibn ‘Abdil Barr (rahimahullah) states, ‘There is no authentic narration which proves that an earthquake struck during the life of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)…”

(Al Istidhkar, vol. 2 pg. 333/334)

However, there is a weak narration that mentions such an occurrence:

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded the following mursal narration (wherein a Tabi’i reports directly from Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam):

Shahr ibn Hawshab (rahimahullah) says, “There was an earthquake in Madinah during the time of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Allah Ta’ala is asking that you adopt goodness and piety and that you repent, so do so’”

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah with footnotes of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah, Hadith: 8420. Also see: Al ‘Uqubat of Imam Abu Bakr Ibn Abid Dunya, Hadith: 18)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith weak.

(At Talkhisul Habir, Hadith: 2257)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
