Showing leniency to the debtor

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What is the source of this narration?

‘A man was granted Jannah. He didn’t have good deeds but would waive the people of their debt.’

Answer

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (radiyallahu’anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘There was a man in the past who was about to die. The Angel asked him: ‘Have you ever did any good?’

He replied: ‘I am unaware of such.’

He was told to think again after which he said: ‘I don’t know of anything [good that I did] besides the fact that I would be lenient when dealing with people; I would give time to the one who could still afford and waive [the debt of] the one who couldn’t afford it.’

Allah Ta’ala admitted this person to Jannah.
