Source for a particular du’a

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Could the following du’a please be sourced?:

Allahumma a’inni ‘ala dini bid dunya wa ‘ala akhirati bit taqwa

is this a Masnun Dua of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)?

Answer

This is reported by Sayyiduna Jabir (radiyallahu’anhu) as the opening part of a long du’a of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam)

(Kitabud Du’a of Tabarani, Hadith: 1449. Also see Al-Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 169)

It is also reported as part of a lengthy du’a which is labelled as ‘Du’aul faraj’ [the du’a for ease] which is recorded By Imams Daylami and Ibn ‘Asakir (rahimahumallah) among others on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu’anhu).

The chains are extremely weak, but the du’a itself has been declared very effective through experience.

(Musnadul Firdaws & Tarikh ibn ‘Asakir, vol.20 pg. 78. Also see Muntahas Sul, vol.4 pgs.472-478, Al-Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 169, Mukhtasarul Maqasid & Hasrush Sharid, vol.2 pg.617-620)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
