Urinary problem and incontinence

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by FatwaCentre.org
Question

A woman experiences a sort of urine incontinence problem. If she passes urine now, then after istinja and wudhu, there’ll be a feeling of heat in her private area and she will be sure that she discharged urine. If she takes a shower now and doesn’t use the toilet, she doesn’t experience this issue.
When she checked before by placing a tissue etc, then there was a wetness that emitted but it wasn’t urine when she smelt it. this leads to a doubt that sometimes perhaps this feeling of urine leaking, may not be urine leaking. How will she perform Salaah? sometimes, she feels as if she could possibly be a ma’dhura due to the fact that if she goes an entire day from the morning till esha salaah without using the toilet, her underwear may be stained and smelling of urine. But she is unaware when it emitted.
what should be done? This has caused a lot of inconvenience in her life. One mufti said this is waswasa, but i don’t think so

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Inspirer of truth

Anything exiting the private parts invalidate one’s wudu. So, if she feels there is a wetness that is emitted, then she must repeat her wudu regardless of whether it is urine or discharge. However, if she is certain that the moisture did not emit from her private parts, but rather it is bodily sweat, then this will not invalidate wudu.

A person is only considered ma’dhur (excused) if they experience their condition continuously for the duration of an entire prayer, such that it is not possible for them to find a moment to perform wudu and offer salat with complete ritual purity. This will establish them to be ma’dhur. Once they are determined to be ma’dhur, the excuse needs to occur at least once in each subsequent prayer time in order to remain a ma’dhur. If the excuse does not occur at all in a prayer time they will no longer be considered a ma’dhur.

From the information you have provided, it seems that she will not qualify as a ma’dhur. The symptoms she is experiencing where she feels the urge to pass urine, even after urinating may be due to a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). We suggest going to a doctor for medical advice on how to manage this condition. Furthermore, the doctor can recommend pelvic muscle exercises to help strengthen the bladder and thereby control the urge to pass urine.

To ensure purity for salat, we advise that for now she leaves sometime between passing urine/istinja’ and performing wudu for salat. This way she can use the toilet if she feels the urge to pass urine again. She may also want to use panty liners or light incontinence pads to keep her clothes free of impurity. Before each salat, the liner should be changed.

And Allah knows best.
