Working in a company that sells alcohol

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Q. Is it allowed to work in a company in which one of the products sold is alcohol? It is a huge wholesale company with many products and different departments, one of which contains alcohol.

A. Due to the fact that the company sells alcohol, it means that it is involved in selling haram products and the income of this will also be haram. So when you receive a salary, it will be one which is mixed with haram income and this is prohibited in Islam.

If it is a huge company that deals in many other products which are halal, then there is no harm working in another department on the condition that your salary will come from that specific department, and not be mixed up with the sales of alcohol. This however, rarely occurs, and I do not think that companies do this. Instead, they pool all their sales together, and fulfill their expenses from the total income of sales of everything, including alcohol. Seeing that this is hardly likely to happen, you will have to look for another job.

As long as you are employed with this company and have not found another job, you should continue to beg Allah for His forgiveness and give out to the poor and needy that percentage of your salary which is equal to the percentage, proportionate to the alcohol sales of the total pool of income of the company. If it is difficult to identify this percentage (amount) then you can use an estimated figure.

And Allah knows best.
