Tasting food while fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Question:
As salaamu ‘alaykum.

I have read somewhere that it is permissible for a fasting person to taste the food that they are cooking for their family/guests etc., providing that they do not consume bite sizes and whatnot.
Is this true ?

Answer:
Wa Alaikum As Salaam,
Generally, tasting the food etc. is reprehensible (makrooh) while fasting. The allowance is only given at a time when a wife fears cruelty from her husband if the food is not cooked properly. In this case, she will be allowed to taste the food while cooking, in order to save herself from the cruelty of her husband. When this is not the case, then it is not proper for her to taste the food or anything else. ( Fatawa Qadhi Khan Vol. 1 pg 98 : Fatawa Tatar Khaniya Vol. 2 pg 38 — Fatawa Haqqaaniya Vol. 4 pg 156).
