QUESTION:
As Salaamu Alaikum,
Name related to new a new born, for female child, the name “Haadiyah” I have intention to put above name. Some say the above name is restricted, because it’s Allah’s name, like Haadi. So don’t put this name alone. Please kindly clarify the above mentioned name if it is restricted or not. If it is restricted, then how to overcome it’s meaning. ( Like Abdul hadi or something else.)
ANSWER:
Wa Alaikum As Salaam,
The name ‘Haadi’ means a guide and a leader, and it is not restricted to Allah Alone. If it is used with the definite article as ‘Al-Haadi”, then it would be used for Allah Alone. So, in that case, it would be better to use the word ‘Abdul’ before it, as in ‘Abdul Haadi’ which means the servant of ‘Al Haadi’. As for the name “Haadi’ alone without the definite article (Al), then it is permissible to use it for a boy child since its usage is not restricted to Allah Alone. It is narrated that the name ‘Haadi’ was an attribute/name for the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.S).While on the migration to Madinah, whenever Abu Bakr (R.A) was asked about his companion (the Prophet S.A.S), (in order to conceal the identity of the Prophet (S.A.S)), he used to say, ‘He is ‘Haadi’ (a guide) who is guiding me’. (Ahmad). Therefore, since the name ‘Haadi’ is not restricted to Allah Alone, it can be used as a name for a child. As such, using “Haadiyah’ for a girl child would be allowed since it is the feminine gender of ‘Haadi’. In the book, ‘Islamic Names’ written by Dr. Muhammad Imran Ashraf Usmani (the son of Mufti Taqi Usmani), he has also mentioned ‘Haadiyah’ as a female name, which means it is permissible to be used.
