WHAT TO SAY WHEN ANGRY

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

QUESTION:

As Salaamu Alaikum,

What are duas one can say for someone if they are constantly very angry and has a bad temper?

ANSWER:

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

In this state, one should recite the following dua whenever he/she becomes angry or the bad temper flares up:-

اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْلِيْ ذَنْبِيْ وْ اَذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قَلْبِيْ وَ أَجِرْنِيْ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ

(Allhummagh firli Zanbi Wa Adhhib Ghaidha Qalbi Wa Ajirni Minash Shaitaan)

‘O Allah forgive me, remove the anger of my heart and protect me from Satan’.

(Kitab Adh Adhkaar – Nawawi page. 207 Dar Ibn Hazm Beirut 2005).

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) also advised the believers to seek refuge in Allah from Satan whenever they become angry; In this state, a person should say:-

أَعُوْذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ

‘A’ouzu Billahi Minash Shaitaanir Rajeem’

Regarding the above, it is narrated by the companion, Sulaiman bin Surad (R.A) that he said, ‘I was once sitting with the Prophet (upon whom be peace) when two men started to curse and abuse each other. The face of one of them became red and his veins became swollen. Upon this, the Prophet (upon whom be peace) said, ‘Verily I know of a word, which if he says it, then his anger will go away. The Prophet (upon whom be peace) then said,

أَعُوْذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ

(Bukhari, Muslim – Kitab Al Adhkaar – Nawawi)

And Allah Knows best
