Can i use a permanent form of birth control?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

I am 40 year old woman with three kids and intend to NOT have any more in the future due to health risks etc.

In looking at the different options such the intrauterine device, or IUD (Coil) Etc, there are complications, bleeding etc that  are experienced in those methods.
I’m thinking that the best and least complicated is the Tubal  Ligation (tying of the tubes). Can you please advise me if this procedure would be permissible.

Generally, permanent forms of contraceptives are not allowed except when the health or life of a woman is endangered by pregnancy. When this is not the case, then temporary forms of contraceptives can be adopted when there is a valid reason to do so. Therefore, tubal ligation being a permanent method of contraception would not be allowed except in a case of dire necessity.

Not wanting to have children in the future due to health risks will give you the allowance to adopt temporary forms of contraception, but not a permanent method. Only if you are informed by a reliable health professional of real/serious danger to your health or life, then a method like that of Tubal ligation will be allowed.

And Allah Knows Best.
